IRCTC News - 44,000 Ticket Agents IDs Disabled

Since early this year Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation(IRCTC) has been gearing up to stop the railway ticket piracy. The fraudulent ticketing is prevalent in IRCTC online and offline.

Many agents have been disabled from booking tickets online. Local newspapers have reported that around 44,000 agent IDs are de-activated and are closed out from booking any new tickets. Along with that over 5 lakh other IDs are also closed by the ticketing vigilance teams from the agency.

This is being done in an effort to provide better service to general customers. The registered agencies were using multiple accounts to make bookings with the same email address and user ids. This causes the shortage of railway tickets to the general public. The Tatkal Tickets for instant bookings offered by IRCTC were being misused by these agents so as to make additional profits from the shortage of tatkal tickets.

IRCTC has also fined the agents with Rs. 20,000 in addition to closing the agency ID.

Online ticket booking on IRCTC website homepage has greatly increased recently. There have been 4.95 online ticket bookings from the portal on a single day. This is because the Tatkal Bookings have been segregated from the general bookings. Tatkal bookings start at 10 AM as whereas general timing of online booking starts at 8 AM everyday.
